Class Descriptions

Nutmeg's Dance & Theatre Co.

Ballet C & D: Our Ballet classes follow a structured format, progressing from warm-up and barre work to center work and across the floor exercises, all while focusing on technique, musicality, and artistic expression. Students will learn ballet vocabulary, improve alignment, and develop strength, flexibility, and coordination.

Modern: Modern class will incorporate many of the foundations of modern dance technique, including suspension and release, fall and recovery, the use of momentum and connecting breath with movement. Dancers will explore new ways of moving in combinations, floor work and partnering, and also in various methods of improvisation.

Commercial Hip Hop/Street Jazz is a high-energy, rhythmic, and precise style rooted in street dance culture. As a key branch of commercial dance—a broad category that includes styles like hip-hop and jazz—this form is designed for performance in front of an audience. You'll often see it featured in music videos, concerts, films, TV shows, and musical theatre. With its dynamic movement and visual impact, street jazz/commercial dance blends street authenticity with stage-ready flair, preparing dancers for commercial work in the dance industry (and just for fun!)

Tap: Tap is a classic form of dance that not only involves how one looks while dancing, but also how one sounds. Tap is a fun, upbeat, rhythmic style of dance that allows the dancer to develop their coordination, balance, rhythm and musicality.

Ballet A: This beginning level class is designed to develop awareness of alignment and basic ballet vocabulary and technique. Class will include basic barre exercises, as well as center work. Your child will have a fun time learning the secrets behind becoming a great ballerina or danseur!

Ballet B: This class is designed to develop awareness of alignment and basic ballet vocabulary and technique. Class will include basic barre exercises, as well as center work, and across the floor exercises. We strike a perfect balance of fun and technicality!

Musical Theatre: A fun and unique class that combines the genres of acting, singing, and dance into one fun, high energy class. Students will play theatre games, learn songs and choreography, and learn to communicate stories through acting, vocals and movement. This class will also work on a musical theatre number for the Spring show!

Partnering: Class will focus on developing the skills and techniques necessary for dancers to work effectively together. These classes emphasize trust, communication, and physical coordination, building towards more complex movements like lifts and turns.

Pointe: For students with a minimum of 2 years of ballet training. Each class includes barre exercises, center work, and across the floor combinations, focused on strengthening the feet and ankles. Pointe class can be taken on flat as a preparatory class, or in pointe shoes, at the instructors discretion. Dancers must have Nutmeg’s approval to join this class. Dancers must also be enrolled in 2 additional ballet classes per week, along with pointe class.

Broadway Jazz: The style that inspired so many dance styles to follow; Broadway Jazz offers a stylistic approach to movement that is theatrical, technical, versatile, and fun! Classes will consist of warm-up, progressions across the floor, and choreography for our end of the year show.

Dance Team: Class will be focused on what it takes to make a pro-dance team. We will work on choreography, technique, and learn a combination in the style of jazz/hip hop; as well as learn about other responsibilities of pro-dancers/cheerleaders such as public speaking and community service.

Tumbling Tots: A fun, recreational class centered on fundamental acrobatic technique to increase flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, endurance, timing, body awareness, self-discipline and confidence.

Beginning Dance: We invite our little ones to experiment with creative movement, as well as an introductory to ballet, jazz, and hip hop elements. These 45-minute classes will involve the use of fun music and various props to help engage the students' imaginations while promoting a foundation in dance.

Mommy/Daddy + Me: For 18 months to 2.5(ish) years, this class is all about fun and development! It's a special time where parents or guardians join in with their little ones to learn and play together. You'll be right there with your child, helping them feel secure and showing them how to join in. Together with our instructor, you'll follow along as we explore listening skills, taking turns, and following directions- all important stuff wrapped up in a relaxed, fun, dance class setting.

Ballet/Tap Combo: Experience the joy of ballet and tap dance, too! We learn the fundamentals of both ballet and tap, and include social time to connect with other students, and creative movement games for creativity and self-expression.

Hip Hop: A dynamic style of street dance that grew out of hip hop culture and music. In our class, we blend this foundation with elements of street jazz—a high-energy, stylized form of movement that draws from both jazz dance and urban dance culture. The result is a fun, expressive mix of sharp hits, fluid grooves, and performance-driven choreography.

World Dance: Let the rhythm of the music from across the world move your body! Explore dance styles of Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and more, in this high energy class. Expect a musical blend of African, tropical, Jamaican, traditional African rhythms, and hip-hop. Be prepared for kicks, jumps, spins and high torso and arm movements. A perfect opportunity to let go and just dance!

Jazz/Tap Combo: Get ready to shuffle, stomp, and sparkle! This high-energy combo class introduces young dancers to the rhythms of tap and the playful style of jazz dance through fun games, music, and imaginative movement. Dancers will build coordination, musicality, and confidence as they leap like stars, tap to the beat, and groove with friends. Perfect for little ones who love to move, make noise, and have fun!

Contemporary: Where strength meets expression, and technique meets creativity. In this class, dancers will explore big, bold movement—leaping, rolling, stretching, twisting—as they learn to use their whole bodies to tell a story. We focus on athleticism, full-body coordination, musicality, and how to move through space with power and grace. Dancers are encouraged to explore their own unique style, tapping into emotion, energy, and artistry. It's a class where sweat, soul, and self-expression all come together.

Jazz/Tumble: This upbeat combo class brings the best of jazz dance and tumbling together for a whole lot of fun! Dancers will groove to the music with high-energy jazz moves—think kicks, turns, and lots of sass—while also learning basic tumbling skills like rolls, bridges, and cartwheels. The class helps build strength, flexibility, coordination, and confidence, all through playful movement and creative expression. Perfect for kids who love to dance and flip!

Acro: A fun, recreational class centered on fundamental acrobatic technique to increase flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, endurance, timing, body awareness, self-discipline and confidence. Analise will meet the students where they are, and help them to hone their skills, while learning and working on new ones, too!

Boys Hip Hop/Tumble/Tricks: A super fun class; beginning with working on acrobatic skills and tricks, and then moving on to hip hop dance, break dancing, and learning a routine for our spring show!

Advanced Repertory: In this class, we will choose a dance piece from Nutmeg's (or, another dance's company's) history - could be any genre! We will work on learning and recreating the piece to be performed in this year's show. It is a very special experience!

Pre-Ballet/Creative Movement: Does your little one love to move and dance? This class will give your dancer a basic introduction to ballet steps and positions, while enhancing their motor skills and coordination with fun exercises in music quality and rhythms, story-telling with movement, and free dance with various props.
