Class Descriptions

Nutmeg's Dance & Theatre Co. 2023/2024

Modern/Contemorary: Students will learn a fusion of several Modern techniques, including Martha Graham, Lester Horton (Alvin Ailey), and Jose Limon. Class will consist of a warm-up, across the floor progressions, and choreography.

World Dance: Let the rhythm of the music from across the world move your body! Explore dance styles of Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and more, in this high energy class. Expect a musical blend of African, tropical, Jamaican, traditional African rhythms, and hip-hop. Be prepared for kicks, jumps, spins and high torso and arm movements. A perfect opportunity to let go and just dance!

Ballet: Ballet consists of barre & center work, and progressions across the floor; as well as the development of a performance piece for our Spring show. Ballet is the foundation of many dance genres including Jazz, Modern dance, and Contemporary, and is a wonderful accompaniment to all dance forms.

Broadway Jazz: The style that inspired so many dance styles to follow; Jazz offers a stylistic approach to movement that is theatrical, technical, versatile, and fun! Classes will consist of warm-up, progressions across the floor, and choreography for our end of the year show.

Advanced Repertory: In this class, we will choose a dance piece from Nutmeg's (or, another dance's company's) history - could be any genre! We will work on learning and recreating the piece to be performed in this year's show. It is a very special experience!

Ballet/Tap Combo: Experience the joy of ballet and tap dance, too! We learn the fundamentals of both ballet and tap, and include social time to connect with other students, and creative movement games for creativity and self-expression.

Pre-Ballet/Creative Movement: Does your little one love to move and dance? This class will give your dancer a basic introduction to ballet steps and positions, while enhancing their motor skills and coordination with fun exercises in music quality and rhythms, story-telling with movement, and free dance with various props.

Tumbling Tots & Beginning Acro: A fun, recreational class centered on fundamental acrobatic technique to increase flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, endurance, timing, body awareness, self-discipline and confidence.

Beginning Dance: We invite our little ones to experiment with creative movement, as well as an introductory to ballet, jazz, and hip hop elements. These 45-minute classes will involve the use of fun music and various props to help engage the students' imaginations while promoting a foundation in dance.

Tap: Promotes the development of rhythmics and dynamics, flexibility and strength of the ankles, coordination, and speed. Classes consist of warm-up, center work, progressions across the floor, and choreography.

Choreography: This class explores the principles of dance composition, including creativity, movement invention, choreographic structuring and the development of analytical skills as applied to dance. Dancers will create their own piece for the spring show!

Dance Team/Commercial Jazz: Class will be focused on what it takes to make a pro-dance team. We will work on choreography, technique, and learn a combination in the style of jazz/hip hop; as well as - learn about other responsibilities of pro-dancers/ cheerleaders such as public speaking and community service.

Leaps/Turns/Stretch: Dancers will work to increase flexibility, turns with more precision, and various leaps. Students will focus on a variety of leaps, jumps, chaînès, pirouettes, fouettès, etc. This class will work on a routine for the show, that will highlight these elements!

Musical Theatre: A unique class that combines the genres of acting, singing, and dance into one fun, high energy class. Students will play theatre games, learn songs and learn to communicate stories through acting, vocals and movement.

Pointe: All pointe classes are designed for students with previous ballet training. Each class includes barre exercises, center work, and across the floor combinations, focused on strengthening the feet and ankles. Pointe class can be taken on flat or in pointe shoes, at the instructors discretion. Dancers must have instructor approval for this class. Dancers must be enrolled in 2 additional ballet classes per week, along with pointe class.

(Just a note to say I often watch from the sound booth in the very back of theauditorium, and the view is awesome, you do not need to be super close to have a really great view.) ~ Due to the East Granby's fire code, there is no standing in the auditorium, at anytime. Everyone that enters the auditorium must have a ticket/seat, thank you for understanding. ~ Handicapped spaces are available. These seats will be marked in purple, rather than red. These spots do not have a chair, they are only for wheel chairs - thank you! ~ When you arrive, you will show your downloaded/printed ticket, or, pull up your digital ticket on a mobile device. We can scan either way. Please be sure you have your correct ticket for the correct performance, i.e. a ticket for the 2:00 pm show will not scan for the 6:00 pm show. ~ There will be no ticket sales at the door. Tickets need to be purchased online. Tickets can be purchased up until 30 minutes into the show. Please let your family and friends know, thank you. ~ Parents are not required to watch all shows from the audience. You may decide to attend 1, or all 3 shows, it is totally your choice. However - please note that parents will need a ticket for any show they plan to watch from the audience. Dancer Show Policies (We realize all kiddos are different, so if you have any concerns about your dancer and what they do during the show, please just reach out to me.) ~ Dancers performing in the show do not need a ticket, unless you would like your young dancer (ages 8 and under) to come sit and watch the show with you after they’ve performed, and have their own seat. (If they sit on your lap, no need for a ticket.) ~ Dancers ages 9 and over will not come out into the audience at all during the show, they will stay back stage for the entire show, and bow with the company at the end of the show. ~ For dancers 8 and younger, there are a few options: ~ If their family is watching the show, they can be picked up backstage after they dance, and go to sit with their family (on a lap, or with a ticket/seat.) If they would like to bow at the end of the show, a family member should get them backstage to line up at least 2 numbers before the last dance. ~ If their family is not watching the show, they may be picked up backstage and brought home when they are done dancing, or, a female parent or guardian can stay backstage with them for the show so that they can bow at the end of the show.
