About Nutmeg's

Nutmeg's Dance & Theatre Co. 2023/2024

Owner/ Artistic Director of Nutmeg's Dance & Theatre Co., Meg Fenton Funk, better known as "Nutmeg" to her dancers, waited until she was 6 years old and attending Cultural Arts Camp in Bloomfield, CT to begin choreographing.

In 2003, "Nutmeg," a Marymount Manhattan College graduate, carried out her lifelong dream, and opened a dance studio in Southwick, MA. Her goal was to bring her love and passion for dance to local children, adults, parents, and grandparents. her vision for her dance studio was to create a very professional, family-like, non-competitive atmoshphere, where students of all ages are encouraged to achieve their personal best.

Meg grew up in Granby, CT, and in high school attended the Greater Hartford Academy of the Performing Arts in Harford, CT. It was a diverse, professional, and wonderfully artistic institution. At the Academy, Meg not only trained in all forms of dance including Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap, African Dance, and Modern, but she also received vocal and acting training.

After graduating from the Academy, Meg ventured on to the Big Apple! She was accepted into the prestigious Marymount Manhattan College Dance Department, and was also accepted as a Musical theatre minor. At Marymount, Meg trained with phenomenally talented teachers, such as Milton Myers of Alvin Ailey, Anthony Fero of Twyla Tharp Dance Co., Ed Kresley, and Chet Walker, co-choreographer of the hit broadway show, "Chicago".

While in New York, Meg was also a scholarship student at the world famous Broadway Dance Center, where she took classes with Wade Robson, Cris Judd, Bev Brown, Shane Sparks, Mia Michaels, ray Leeper and many more. This experience really drew her into the Hip Hop dance style, which is spreading rapidly across the country.  She is so excited to offer Hip Hop classes for children and adult in this area.

During her time in NY, Meg also earned a spot as a dancer on the MTV show, "Direct Effect", and in a Jennifer Lopez MTV Special.

In 2002, Meg competed in the Miss America Scholarship program and coincidentally won the title of "Miss Nutmeg." She went on to compete in the Miss Connecticut Scholarship Program in June 2002, where her platform was MAGIC: Making the Arts Give Inspiration to Children.

Every summer though, Meg came home to Granby, where she ran a summer dance program on her front porch, “Auntie Nutmeg’s Summer Dance Program.” It started with 11 girls on her front porch in 2000, and grew by word of mouth to over 100 boys and girls by the summer of 2003! With the help of a very supportive family and friends, that small summer program transformed into what is now Nutmeg’s Dance & Theatre Co.!

In 2011, Meg got certified in Zumba Fitness, and has had the best time dancing with hundreds of wonderful people. Staying fit, healthy & happy has never been so much fun.

In June of 2014, Meg traveled to White Lotus Yoga Foundation in Santa Barbara, CA, to attend their 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training with Ganga White and Tracey Rich. It was the experience of a lifetime, and she is so excited to embark on this journey and share her love of yoga with others!

Meg credits all the wonderful parents for all their support in making the program so very successful, and for helping to make her dreams come true!

Nutmeg's Dance & Theatre Co. was founded in 2000 with 11 dancers, a teacher, and a dream. Today, we operate in a 2,500 sq. ft. studio and have over 200 boys and girls dancing with us! Our goal is to provide top notch dance education in a professional, family like environment.

When Nutmeg was 12 years old her dance teacher, Melissa Jean Feder, of Terpsichore Dance & Theatre Company, taught her that anyone could dance, regardless of their age, color, disability, body type, or financial means. Now Meg is passing on that philosophy to her students. Throughout its five years in business, Nutmeg’s has grown to have over 200 students, and offers classes in all forms of dance, for all ages and levels, beginner through professional.

The studio is truly a family atmosphere – students and their siblings, mothers and fathers, are all part of our family. It is extremely supportive and non-competitive, and great emphasis is placed on technique, creativity, fun, and achieving one’s personal best!
